Research interests

  • State and state formation in the eastern Congo from a local perspective; land; use and mobilization of history and historical naratives within a conflict context; Simba rebellions 
  • PhD-research: 'People on the move. Frontiers, borders, mobility and history in the Lake Kivu region 
  • Master's thesis (SOAS, 2005): 'The migration of 'Banyarwanda' towards the Kivu during the colonial period'
  • Master's thesis (University Ghent, 2003): 'The star in the land of unholy idols: an interpretation of the images in the Belgian colonial cinema (1947-1957)'

Fieldwork

Extensive research experience in Rwanda and the eastern Congo since 2009;
