Malika Dekkiche

Academic overview

Malika Dekkiche was a student in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Liège (Belgium), where she obtained her Ph.D. degree in 2011. During the  2011-2012 academic year, she was a B.A.E.F. postdoc fellow at the University of Chicago (NELC Department). She had previously been a visiting researcher at the University of Chicago in Fall-Winter 2009 and Summer 2010, as well as in Cairo (IFAO) from September 2007 to July 2009.

Research

Malika Dekkiche's research is devoted to pre-modern Islamic History, especially the 13th-16th centuries in Egypt, Syria, Anatolia, Iran, Central Asia, and Hijaz. Her major interests concern the study of diplomatic relationships between Muslim entities as well as the practice of diplomacy and war during this period and their significance for the establishment of legitimacy and kingship. In this framework, she gives special attention to broader themes, including:
- Political history;
- Diplomatics;
- Religious patronage;
- Historiography;
- Transregional networks of exchanges;
- Commerce;
- Papyrology, epigraphy, codicology, numismatic.
